Molly

For those of you that know me well… you know that before Lauren came along, Molly, our beloved golden retriever was the only child we had (she turned 5 this year!). She is still one of babies, but now that baby lives primarily outside.
I know, I know… “But Tracy, you swore UP and DOWN that whenever you had kids you would not put Molly outside.” Because Molly loved being inside.

However, things, they do change. And the buckets of hair that she was shedding was too much for me to handle with Lauren all over the place and Molly’s hair all over Lauren.

So, Molly got put outside about a year ago, just after we moved to our new house. And she has done well! Her skin problems miraculously cleared up… no more "back bumps". And she does not require a thyroid pill everyday anymore. Her ears, however, are ALWAYS dirty. And they become infected periodically.

Here is where this story is going… Apparently Molly had a pretty bad ear infection in one ear. Her right ear to be exact. We were not aware of this. It had gotten bad enough for her to scratch the mess out of it and shake her head all the time. Well, she did this enough that my poor, furry 80 lb. beast of lap dog busted a blood vessel in her ear. It swelled up to the size of about 1 ½ golf balls in her ear flap.

We are obviously terrible parents to our fur-child and it went unnoticed… until my father-in-law was petting her on Friday and said, “What’s wrong with Molly’s ear?”

We were shocked and concerned when we saw what he was referring to. Needlesstosay, we ran Molly to vet the next morning.

This part gets graphic people… And then we watched the Doc drug the dog and drain the pocket of blood from her ear. I’m not lying… there was a lot of fluid in there. Poor baby.
And then she bled all the way home like a stuck pig. It looked like something from a horror film.

Although my fur baby had to endure this rough experience, she will remain an outside dog except in times of extreme heat and cold. She really does like it outside. I think she just wishes we lived out there with her.

We have committed ourselves to cleaning her ears out a lot more often to keep this from happening again.

She is really enjoying the slice of cheese she gets twice a day that helps wash down the antibiotic horse pill she will take for the next week. But she still hates having her ears cleaned.

Oh, no! Poor Molly! Glad to know that she is going to be alright. As big of a freak as I am about Shelby, we NEVER clean her ears. Maybe this will inspire me.

I know what you mean about the buckets of hair. Shelby's hair is shorter than Molly's, but she still sheds an awful lot. And the light carpet/dark dog hair combo isn't helping me out any!
